A camera-shy Vaibhav Goenka rolled up in his Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640 Roadster. It’s not the car he drives every day; that’s a Jaguar XJ. He takes the Lamborghini out only after midnight, when the streets are traffic-free. “The car suffers on Calcutta roads, with all the bumps and potholes. And sometimes other drivers get dangerously close just to see the car,” said the businessman. His dream car? The Koenigsegg Agera CCXR.
This limited edition Aston Martin is owner Parveen Agarwal’s favourite. “The Lamborghini is for the highway but the Aston Martin is for the city. It’s the most comfortable sports car I have,” said the builder. His favourite feature? The sound system. He has to be super careful because any sort of damage means having to wait for servicemen from Delhi to arrive! Is it worth it, though? “Absolutely!”
What: Beasts on Wheels
Where: Quest mall, 33 Syed Amir Ali Avenue
On a roll: It’s not every day that one finds supercars speeding down Calcutta roads in close succession but this is exactly what happened on Sunday (May 31). Fifteen cars rolled into luxury mall Quest at 11am and parked there for the afternoon, drawing an excited crowd, while their owners swapped supercar stories at Serafina. “We wanted to bring supercar fans together because it’s such a niche area of interest,” said Adarsh Tulshan of Speed Inc, one of the organising bodies.
Supercars spotted: Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Aston Martin and anything on wheels that flash by like the wind!
Shrivardhan Kanoria, who’s known for his passion for vintage cars, surprised everyone by turning up in his 1931 Chevrolet, quite the show-stopper among the supercars. The first owner of this car was a Maharaja in UP and it took Shrivardhan and his father — the late Shashi Kanoria — two years to restore it to its current glory. “It’s not easy to get used to driving a vintage car but once you learn how to use it, it runs as smoothly as any modern car,” said Shrivardhan.
The proud owner of this F430 Spider is Azam Momen. His uncle, Gulam Momen, said that the family takes out their sports cars out almost every Sunday for a drive down NH2 or NH6. “Some of the areas are better than Bombay or Delhi roads.” Though Gulam drove his new Lamborghini Huracan to Quest, his personal favourite is the 1937 Rolls-Royce 25/30 he’s had for over 60 years.
“Once you buy a convertible, you’ll never go back to SUVs and sedans,” said Ratul Sood, who owns his dream car — the Audi A4 Cabriolet. “I wanted to buy a sports car I could use every day. I needed it to be a four-seater and I wanted a high car because low cars are only good for highway driving. It’s a fantastic car,” signed off Sood, who was accompanied by son Angad.
t2 also jaw-dropped at this Lamborghini as it rolled into Quest.
This Porsche Panamera belongs to Adarsh Tulshan, who prefers to drive a Boxster or a Chevrolet Cruze on a normal day. “The Panamera is for Sundays. I think I got it mostly because I loved the colour! It looks great and drives well... what more do I need?” said the Chevy dealer.
