Time’s Up, Gentlemen

We were upset that Selena Gomez and Timothee Chalamet were starring in Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York but are glad to hear that they have donated their salaries to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. Chalamet’s Instagram post said: “I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: Time’s Up, the LGBT Centre in New York, and Rainn. I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all the people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.” Also the accusation against Aziz Ansari has had us talking about the grey area between consensual sexual interaction and outright assault, and how much of that area is uncomfortable for a woman to experience. We believe that whole culture of what is “normal” in dating must be reassessed so that we do not normalise the discomfort and reluctant consent of women and this is where the #MeToo moment is leading us.

Waffle delights!

The St. Xavier’s College back gate is becoming foodie wonderland with The Belgian Waffle Co. all set to open doors there in a few days, right next to Yummies and Delight’s. But while the first- and second-years are rejoicing, the third-years are lamenting this new addition to the Park Street campus’ chomp list as they are all set to leave.

Maisie messes with Graham Norton

It’s no secret that 20-year-old Maisie Williams’s TV avatar Arya Stark from the Game of Thrones is (in)famous for her hit list. This list came into the limelight on The Graham Norton Show when she was asked to rattle off the names and she expanded it to include Graham and co-guests, Tom Hanks and Anthony Joshua. Looks like Maisie will single-handedly keep GoT fans going while we wait for the new season. Can we have some new names added every now and then please?

Game on for Tay

Taylor Swift’s End Game music video was released last week and we Swifties just can’t keep calm! The week began with #reputation, #taylorswift and #endgame trending on Twitter worldwide. But that’s not all, as she is gearing up to release the music video for I Did Something Bad soon.

Bigg Boss fever

Bigg Boss fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hai star Shilpa Shinde beat her arch-nemesis (on the show) Hina Khan to win season 11 of the infamous reality show. With Dhinchak Pooja’s appearance in the grand finale, performing to Dilon ka shooter, and Salman Khan dancing to the tunes of his latest hits from Tiger Zinda Hai, the finale was sure something!

OFF the pitch

Chelsea could experience a managerial overhaul by the end of this season — former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique and Juventus’s Max Allegri are among the candidates to replace Antonio Conte. On the other hand, retired Spain and Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has announced that he will make the transition to management and is interested in managing Liverpool in the future. Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez’s move from the Emirates to Old Trafford is finally sealed after prolonged talks with Manchester City and Liverpool. The Red Devils can also expect Cristiano Ronaldo to make a comeback if Real Madrid fail to make an offer before his contract expires at the end of the season.

Bring on the sheroes!

Finally, it looks like the stand-alone Black Widow film we’ve been rooting for is actually going to happen. Though it hasn’t been green-lit yet, the buzz is that the Scarlett Johansson headliner has acquired Jac Schaeffer as writer. With Wonder Woman being the stand-out superhero film of 2017 and the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel already slated for a 2019 release, maybe Black Widow will join the team soon.

App-y fizz

YouTube announced that its mobile apps could be gaining a new set of features, including a dark theme and an incognito mode. The app is also expected to make it slightly easier for users to skip advertisements on videos. Honestly, we don’t care because the only time YouTube will get our thumbs up is when the music doesn’t stop if we minimise the app.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s algorithm update in favour of “meaningful” social interactions has made some of us pretty happy.

Bleak Times for Gilead

The trailer of The Handmaid’s Tale is dark. Offred is gagged and bound and this has left us wondering if this has anything to do with her failed escape attempt. The slow cover of Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth only adds to the grim mood and clearly, the Republic of Gilead is in for a bad time. Without writer Margaret Atwood’s vision from the original book to light the way, the show is stepping into uncharted territory. We can’t wait to see where it goes!

Perfectly Weird

A great soundtrack and a plotline that keeps us guessing are what make us appreciate the weird yet relatable Netflix dark-comedy series, The End of the F***ing World. Based on a graphic novel that is way darker than the television adaptation, we fans are absolutely loving the chemistry between James and Alyssa, played by Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden respectively. #WeWantSeasonTwo

Pottermania

It’s been a good week for Pottermaniacs with #BlackHogwarts trending on Twitter and the Twitteratti letting their imagination lose about how their favourite fantasy world would be if Harry Potter was played by an all-black cast. From Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty as Dumbledore in the scene where he meets Harry in heaven to Rihanna being the Hufflepuff belle at the Yule Ball, the tweets were quite creative and even caught the attention of J.K. Rowling, who tweeted “Seeing them and loving them. #BlackHogwarts”.

In other Potter tidings, the fan-made Voldemort: Origins of the Heir released on YouTube. Although we appreciate the effort of director Gianmaria Pezzato and the amazing duelling scene between Tom Riddle and Hufflepuff heir Lazarus Smith, the narrative was slow and the flashbacks were predictable.

We were also happy that Daniel Radcliffe spoke up about the casting of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, saying that actors in the past have been thrown out of the Harry Potter films for far lesser faults than the accusations against Depp.

Goodbye, Dolores

We can’t believe that Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, passed away at the age of 46. We’ll always remember you, Dolores, for your great songs like Zombie, Dreams, Linger and Promises. Yes, we miss you, When You’re Gone.
