As the Marvel Cinematic Universe turns 10, t2 picks 20 great moments from the world of The Avengers

MCU 20/10

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, THE AVENGERS

Four years we had waited for this moment and this money shot was everything we had hoped it would be. The 360-degree shot of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye assembling in New York as they try to stop the Chitauri, is just magnificent.

PUNY GOD, THE AVENGERS

Oh we can’t get enough of this scene! When Hulk confronts Loki in the Stark Towers, Loki yells out: “Enough! You are all of you beneath me. I am a god, you dull creature, and I will not be bullied by...” but he doesn’t get a chance to finish the sentence because Hulk smashes Loki like he was a sack of rubbish, and walks away with a disdainful “Puny god” without looking back. Loki is left half buried in the floor, moaning.

AIRPORT FIGHT, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

This is, without a doubt, the best scene from all of the 10 years of the MCU. We’d seen the Avengers team up to battle the bad guys twice before this but we never expected to see them fight each other. And what an incredible scene that was! From watching Tony Stark’s team line up and face off against Captain America’s, to Spider-Man’s introduction, watching friends battle with friends, Ant-Man changing sizes from normal to tiny to gigantic, all within the confines of an airport, is something we’ll remember for a long time.

TAKING ON THE TERRORISTS, IRON MAN

Iron Man likes sweeping in to save the day but the first time he did it as he saved the people of Gulmira from the terrorists still remains one of our favourites. The stand-out moment? When he gets knocked out of the sky by a tank, gets up, blows up the tank and walks away with it exploding in the background. Now, that’s style.

LIFTING MJOLNIR, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Downtime for the Avengers means the team sitting around a table drinking while ribbing Thor that his hammer was rigged. What follows is the men flexing their, ahem, muscles as they try to lift the hammer without success. The priceless moment? Thor’s face when Cap is able to move the hammer a tiny bit. You don’t get to see the Avengers having fun, so this makes the scene very special.

FRIEND FROM WORK, THOR: RAGNAROK

The gladiator ring scene — Thor is paired opposite the reigning champion of Sakaar, the Hulk — where the Hulk pounds into the arena and Thor’s face lights up with joy as he tells the Grand Master, “Hey, we know each other! He is a friend from work”, after which he proceeds to tell Hulk everything that’s happened to him, stands out because it exemplifies everything the movie had to offer. It was just so unexpected!

BEING THE FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD GUY, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Peter Parker tries his hand at being the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man as he stops a bicycle thief (but couldn’t find the owner so left it with a note), helps an old lady with directions, stops a car-jacking (only to realise it is the person’s own car) and eats a churro while reporting his day back to Happy Hogan, all the while waiting for a real mission. Awww!

TALKING THE TIP, ANT-MAN

It isn’t easy for side characters to steal the show in a superhero movie but Michael Pena did that multiple times in Ant-Man. But the clincher would be his long-winded tale about how he got a tip about “an old man with a safe” and, even better, about how Falcon was looking for Ant-Man. Oh, Luis is da bomb!

WALKMAN RAID, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Peter Quill aka Star-Lord makes a dramatic entry into the abandoned planet of Morag to steal an orb. He takes off his mask, puts on the headphones, tucks his Walkman into his belt, presses the play button, and dances his way into the ruins to the song Come And Get Your Love. The scene set the tone for the whole movie, which became such a surprising success.

ENTER NICK FURY, IRON MAN

If the film was what kick-started the 10 years we are celebrating with this article, this momentous post credit scene in Iron Man — where we meet Nick Fury who tells Tony Stark that he was there to talk about “The Avengers Initiative” — was what started off the journey for the Avengers. It’s invaluable.

STEVE AND TONY CLASH, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

The final showdown between Iron Man and Captain America is heartbreaking, especially since you can see that both are being played by the villain and not realising it. When Tony learns the truth about the death of his parents and asks Cap if he knew and Cap responds with a yes, you know that’s it. What follows is the most brutal clash between the two that leaves you torn.

NED FINDS OUT, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Peter Parker sneaks into his room dressed in his Spidey suit to avoid being detected by Aunt May, only to discover his best friend Ned sitting there holding a Lego Death Star. Ned’s first reaction? “You are the Spider-Man. From the YouTube video.” What follows is one of the most incredible montages as Ned plagues Peter with questions like: “Do you lay eggs?” “Can you spit venom?” “Can you summon an army of spiders?” “Do the Avengers pay taxes?” “What does Hulk smell like?”

THOR GOES SHOPPING, THOR

There is a lot of Thor-out-of-Asgard moments throughout the first Thor film but our favourite would be the God of Thunder striding into the Pet Palace saying he needs a horse. When the man at the counter tells him they don’t have horses only dogs, cats, birds, Thor comes back with, “then give me one of those large enough to ride”, and you cannot help doubling over with laughter.
