An alumni event that involves music and movies can’t go wrong, can it? No wonder Funtakshari 2014, presented by Birla High School Alumni in association with The Telegraph in October at Vidya Mandir, was such a hit. Twelve alumni associations of city-based schools sent in teams of three to participate in the Antakshari that was emceed by former Birla High School student Rajat Baid. For the ‘fun’ in the Funtakshari, organisers included visual and sound cues in the form of muted video clips of popular songs that the contestants had to guess, as well as English translations of Hindi lyrics that the contestants had to correctly guess and then sing along in the regular Antakshari format.

Six finalists were selected — three from each round — from the first two rounds that saw participation from schools like Association of La Martiniere Alumni (ALMA), the Alumni Association of Modern High School for Girls, South Point Ex-students’ Association, St. Xavier’s School Old Boys’ Association, Alumnorum Societas (ALSOC), Birla High School Alumni, The Assembly of God Church School (Park Street) Alumni, Alumni of Apeejay Schools Kolkata, Kolkata Parkers (Park English School), Shri Shikshayatan Alumni, Calcutta Boys School Old Boys Association, The Frank Anthony Public School Old Students’ Association (FAPSOSA) and Sushila Birla Girls School Alumni.

South Point Ex-students’ Association, Sushila Birla Girls School Alumni, ALMA, Kolkata Parkers (Park English School), Alumni of Apeejay Schools Kolkata and FAPSOSA made it to the finals.

Lots of Kishore, Lata, Asha and Rafi songs and cheering from the alumni later, South Point came first, followed by ALMA and Alumni of Apeejay Schools Kolkata.

The event was attended by S.K. Birla, the chairman of Vidya Mandir Society, and Sumangla Birla, the vice-chairperson of Vidya Mandir Society.

Heads up!, which is more popular as the game that television host Ellen DeGeneres plays on her show, is gaining more popularity among college students with each passing day. It recently became the most downloaded app at the Apple App Store.

It is, basically, a better and a more modern version of Taboo. According to this app, you have to hold the phone against your forehead so that you cannot see the screen, as your friends give you clues to guess what is written on the screen as many times as possible before the timer runs out. It’s as simple as that.

You have a wide range of categories, from funny accents to animals to movie stars. This app is tailor-made to brighten up a party, a long journey or even a long break during college.

“I came across this game while watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show and then started playing it with my friends. Now it has almost become an integral part of all parties,” said Megha Sen, a third-year student of political science at Jadavpur University.
