2017 was a stellar year for fantasy and superhero film buffs with India getting the best of Hollywood’s spectacular flicks. 2018 promises to be even bigger with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, X-Men: Dark Phoenix all in store. Here’s a quick look at the top films to look forward to in the genre
Black Panther (February 16)
The first of 2018’s big superhero releases, Black Panther will be the first Marvel film to feature a predominately black cast. The film will introduce fans to T’Challa aka Black Panther after his brief role in Avengers: Civil War. Fans have been waiting a long time for a standalone Black Panther film and anticipation and excitement for the film is sky high. And looking at the trailer, the expectations are sure to be met.
Early Man (February 16)
Early Man is an upcoming stop-motion animated adventure about early cavemen and their battle to save their way of life
from an evil lord, voiced by Tom Hiddleston, and the inhabitants of nearby Bronze Age City.
A Wrinkle in Time (March 9)
Directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Jennifer Lee, A Wrinkle in Time is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle. The film stars Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peña, André Holland, Zach Galifianakis and Oprah Winfrey.
Tomb Raider (March 16)
Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander brings back to us adventurer Lara Croft, first portrayed by Angelina Jolie.
Pacific Rim Uprising (March 23)
Even though the sequel to Pacific Rim doesn’t have Guillermo del Toro, Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba, we can’t wait for what Rinko Kikuchi, John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny have in store for us.
The New Mutants (April 13)
A superhero horror film where a group of mutants discover their powers while being held against their will in a concealed facility. Directed by Josh Boone and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga, this film is generating a lot of interest.
Avengers: Infinity War (27th April)
The most aniticipated and, by far, the biggest film of the year. Every hero. The biggest villain. And presumably more action and drama and laughs than most other Marvel films. Avengers: Infinity War is the film that Marvel has laid all the groundwork for so far and that is reason alone to not miss it. The fact that it’s being made by Anthony and Joe Russo, who made the last two Captain America films so great, is a bonus.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)
After the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the excitement surrounding the standalone film has reached its peak. We, and presumably everyone else, will be lining up to catch the prequel about the early days of Han Solo.
Untitled Deadpool Sequel (June 1)
The first part was a surprise hit at the box office. Its sequel promises to have presumably more cursing, blood, and guns. It also has Josh Brolin as Cable. And Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz as Domino.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22)
Expect more dinosaurs, and more of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6)
Get ready for more slapstick Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) charm, and Evangaline Lilly lighting up the screen while rocking an A+ bod. Oh, and look forward to Michelle Pfeiffer as well.
Mowgli (October 19)
Not connected to 2016’s The Jungle Book, the live-action adventure fantasy stars Rohan Chand, Matthew Rhys and Freida Pinto, with motion capture performances from Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hollander and
Cate Blanchett. Andy Serkis plays Baloo.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (November 2)
The X-Men films may have had a great run, but they could easily have been walked into the sunset as a cinematic franchise after the epochal Logan. In the 13th instalment in the film series, the X-Men must face the full power of the Dark Phoenix as well as the alien, Shi’ar Empire.
