Does one burn more calories when running or working out in hot weather or a high temperature environment?

It’s possible, but it comes with its own risks.

When you are working out in hot weather, the cardiovascular system has to work overtime to keep the core body temperature from going up too high. When your body works harder, you burn more calories. So you are likely to burn more calories in a high temperature.

But when it’s very hot, you cannot exercise too fast or well. So perhaps you will not be able to work out enough, which means you will not burn enough calories.

Also, hot-environment exercises tend to shift your body from breaking down fat to breaking down carbs for calories, says an August 2020 Nature Metabolism review. That may be due to the fact that carbs fuel your body more quickly than fat does. And if you see a sudden weight loss after working out in hot weather, it may not be fat loss but water loss.

So do you burn more calories in the heat? Perhaps for the time being, but it may not be sustainable or really impact your weight-loss plans.
