Calcutta, June 20: Businessworld (BW), a leading business magazine and an ABP Group publication, has come out with its annual list of Indian billionaires in its latest issue, which is now on the stands.
The study reveals that there are 162 new rupee billionaires in the country – of whom 37 are women. The majority of people on the list are first generation and second generation entrepreneurs.
This year’s new billionaires are collectively worth Rs 93,821 crore. More than 50 of the new billionaires made their wealth in real estate.
The net worth of real estate billionaires rose from Rs 2,787 crore in 2006 to Rs 39,332 crore in 2008: a 14-fold increase. Topping the list of rupee billionaires is Anand Jain and his family who own Jai Corp Steel, followed by Rohtas Goel and family (Omaxe), Virendra D Mhaiskar and family (IRB Infrastructure), Kishore Biyani of Future Capital, and Sudhir Mehta of Torrent Power.
The top women rupee billionaires are Pia Singh of DLF followed by Sobha Menon of Sobha Developers. In dollar terms, steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal continued to top the chart with wealth of $ 45 billion followed by Ambani brothers Mukesh and Anil at No. 2 and No. 3 with assets of $ 43 billion and $ 42 billion, respectively.
