Ganga Mukti Andolan, a voluntary organisation fighting for the cause of the river and fishermen, has stressed on enforcing laws to preventing water pollution.
Instead of adopting strategies for initiating cleanness drive, the organisation says, it would be more effective if adequate steps are taken for prevention of pollution.
The organisation, active for over more than three decades and instrumental in abolishing the infamous 'jalkar zamindari' from the river in 1991, celebrated its 33rd anniversary at Kahalgaon which concluded on Sunday. It was a three-day event.
To mark the event, fishermen took out a boat rally on the river and homemakers from Kagghitola, the fishermen's colony, floated 151 candles in the Ganga in evening.
Anil Prakesh, the national convener of Ganga Mukti Andolan, who presided over the concluding session of its anniversary ceremony, called upon the social activists to accelerate movements for saving the sovereignty of the river. He said the Union government should constitute strict laws for prohibiting pollution in the Ganga.
