Patna/Gaya, April 28: Two girls were allegedly humiliated and run over by a person driving an SUV on the Nawada-Patna road under Mufassil police station in Nawada district on Friday.
Munni Kumari and Julie Kumari of Sitarampur village, about 90km east of Patna, were returning home after attending tuition at America Bigha hamlet and had stopped at a sweetshop near Bedhar on National Highway 31 to have samosas when the incident occurred. Both of them studied in Class X at a government school.
Sources said the SUV, coming from Biharsharif, stopped near the shop where the girls were having samosas. The driver gazed at the two girls and allegedly passed some lewd remarks, a source said.
The girls had barely covered a distance of 500-600m that the vehicle came from behind and knocked them down. The vehicle fell into a ditch when the driver lost control in a bid to flee. He is on the run.
Juli died on the spot and Munni succumbed to her injuries at Nawada Sadar hospital.
The victims’ relatives and some local residents staged a blockade on the highway seeking Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the bereaved families. Station house officer of Muffasil police station Vindhyachal Prasad said: “The victims’ parents claimed that the driver had tried to molest the girls and later knocked them down, leading to their death. They, however, did not mention it in their complaints.”
Nawada deputy superintendent of police Mohammed Rahman said the vehicle was seized and efforts were on to identify its owner.
