Delhi police sealed the record room of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) on Monday evening.
A team of Delhi police's crime branch, which is probing the fake law degree case of former Delhi law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar, visited the university premises to take the action.
Tomar's alleged fake degree had been issued in the name of an institution affiliated with TMBU. The team earlier visited here on June 12. Sources said the record room had been sealed as Delhi police apprehended that the university employees might tamper with case evidence.
On Monday, the team arrived at the TMBU administrative building and held discussion with vice-chancellor Rama Shanker Dubey before sealing the room. The team also interrogated some employees of the examination department and asked them to search some documents related to Tomar.
Earlier, the team had prepared a questionnaire, which was handed over to varsity officials concerned, and a 15-day timeframe was given to submit a detailed reply.
According to TMBU pro-vice-chancellor A.K. Roy, heading an in-house committee to probe the Tomar case, the team urged the varsity committee to help it search related documents. He added that the team was searching the tabulation register of the years in which Tomar pursued his LLB Part II and Part III course, which was earlier kept inside the TMBU record room.
When asked why the Delhi police team sealed the record room, Roy brushed off the question. One of the members of the police team said they had sniffed a conspiracy by TMBU employees who allegedly helped Tomar. "We apprehend that important evidence may be tampered with. So we sealed the record room," he said. He added that the team could take around six-seven employees with them to Delhi for interrogation.
Sources said one Dinesh Srivastava, an employee of the TMBU registration department, was asked to clarify under which norms Tomar was registered in 2001, seven years after his initial admission in 1994 in the law college at Munger. The team suspected the involvement of a major racket operating inside the varsity and reportedly screened some employees involved in helping Tomar.
