Patna: Eat on time, keep diabetes at bay is what the doctors ordered.

Skipping meals among other factors raise a person's chances to get diabetes, doctors attending the concluding day of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India's state chapter said on Sunday.

"The internal body clock gets affected if a person skips meals and works nights, further increasing their chances of getting diabetes. So it is very important to eat on time," said Dr Supriyo Mukherjee at the meeting. The society met for two days in the city.

Dr Vikash Shankar spoke on the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer among others in a diabetic patient. "Diabetic people are prone to diseases such as foot ulcer. In case one develops any type of fungal infection around the foot, s/he should consult doctors as this might advance into diabetic foot ulcer," he said. "In some cases when a person seeks medical assistance late, the limb in which ulcer is found might have to be amputated. Timely treatment of fungal infections in the foot is the need of the hour."

Dr Anil Kumar Virmani from Jamshedpur suggested adolescents to adopt a moderate exercise regimen. "People of all age groups should regularly exercise to keep themselves away from diabetes."

Speaking on "Insulin resistance: friend or foe", Calcutta doctor Samit Ghoshal said: "Insulin resistance protects the heart but on the other hand, deficiency of insulin in the body leads to diabetes. So insulin level should be balanced in everyone's body."

Patna doctor Santosh Kumar Singh delved on upcoming treatments and said "pharmacogenomics is the future treatment of diabetes".

"Pharmacogenomics is the study of a gene's response to particular drug. Which gene is prone to which type of associated complications of diabetes and which drug would suit to particular gene, all this is being studied by experts now and this would be part of the upcoming treatment module for diabetics," said Dr Singh.

Over 500 doctors across the country attended the two-day meeting, said treasurer of the state chapter, Dr Shaibal Guha.
