Patna, May 19: The city’s traffic police will finally get the assistance of four cameras to keep tabs on rash drivers.

The cameras have already arrived in the state capital and will be installed soon.

The police are also developing a software that will connect the offices of traffic superintendents of police (SPs), three traffic deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), traffic police stations, the police lines and the district transport officer (DTO) with the objective of better co-ordination and monitor of traffic movement.

Moreover, two breath analysers and one speed gun have also arrived and the police are contemplating to start the use of the equipment from May 23.

“The spots where the four cameras will be installed have not been decided yet. One of the places would certainly be Dakbungalow Chowk. The final decision on this will be taken at a meeting,” a traffic police officer told The Telegraph today.

With the new software connecting all the offices, including that of the DTO, the cameras will help the police catch an erring driver and fine him for violating traffic norms.

“The main objective behind the setting up of these cameras is to keep a check on motorists who are speeding or wrongly overtaking and driving rashly. These automatic cameras will be clicking rash motorists and the information will be passed on to all the offices through the software. The entire set up is being laid and six new state-of-the-art computers have also arrived,” the officer said.

The police have to knock at the DTO’s office regarding the details of vehicles whose drivers are caught without the required papers.

“With the DTO’s office connected with the software, the traffic police will also have the background information available with their DTO counterparts. This will help identifying vehicles. This software will also have cameras connected to it. Any motorist caught on the camera will be viewed in a flash by the traffic SP to the DSPs,” the officer said.

City SP Shivdeep Lande, who also holds the additional charge of traffic, told The Telegraph that the police will crackdown on drunken drivers and start a thorough check on them, using breath analysers, from May 23. A person caught driving under the influence of liquor would be fined Rs 1,000 and the vehicle would also be confiscated.

“The motorists will have to breathe through the machine. If the reading is more than .30 mg, they will be fined. The vehicle will be kept by the police until the driver comes out of the influence of alcohol,” another police officer said.

The officer said the speed gun radar would also start operating from next week.

“The maximum speed limit in urban areas of Patna is 20km per hour while on the highways, the speed is 40km per hour,” the officer added.
