The Engineering Services Co-ordination Committee, Bihar, has threatened to boycott work from August 28 if the government fails to provide engineers security in the field.

The threat follows last week’s incident where Bagaha sub-divisional officer Animesh Kumar Parashar allegedly abused Bagaha’s water resource department engineers Sujit Kumar Sinha and Satish Prasad Singh.

Committee general secretary Chanakya Kumar Singh said Parashar called up Sinha and Singh on June 16 and abused them over some issue. Panel members claimed this was becoming a regular feature. The committee is seeking Bagaha SDO Parashar’s suspension, protection to engineers and non-interference from government officials.

They also sought revocation of suspensions issued to assistant and senior engineers in the past few years. They said they had no option than to skip work from August 28 if their demands are not met.

Earlier only anti-social elements would threaten and demand rangdaari (extortion). Now, even government officials abuse engineers, they said.

They also sought the arrest of criminals who fired on rural works department executive engineer Chandrakishore Sah, at his Dumraon office in Buxar on July 21, injuring him seriously. Committee general secretary Kamlakant Sharma said the attack was the outcome of increasing interference by anti-social elements in government work.
