Anand Kumar, founder and director of Super 30 that has carved the future of over 300 students from poor background, has been selected for the Maharishi Ved Vyas National Award for 2014-15.

The award is given annually by the Madhya Pradesh government for outstanding contribution and creativity in the field of education.

The MP government award carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 2 lakh. MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan would confer the award on Anand at a function in Bhopal on Independence Day. In 2010, the Bihar government conferred Anand Kumar with the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Shiksha Puraskar - the highest award by the government of Bihar during Education Day function.

Anand, who comes from a poor family and has struggled a lot, has been imparting IIT coaching free of cost to students coming from economically poor background. Recognising the contribution of Anand in the field of education, Anand has received various awards, including Prof Yashwantrao Kelkar Yuva Puraskar, 2010, by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Bangalore.

Anand's Super 30 has also received praise from US President Barack Obama's special envoy Rashad Hussain, who termed it the best institute in the country.

Also, the American weekly magazine Newsweek has taken note of the initiative of Anand and included his school in the list of the most innovative schools in the world.

In April 2011, Anand was selected by European magazine Focus as one of the global personalities who have the ability to shape exceptionally talented people.

He has been selected by UK-based magazine Monocle among the list of 20 pioneering teachers of the world.

The government of British Columbia, Canada, has also honoured Anand.

Other honours include Bank of Baroda's Sunlife Achievement Award for special teaching for poor, the S Ramanujan Award by the Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences (IRDS), the Real Hero Award and others.

On his recent achievement, Anand said: "Such types of awards gives me the motivation to do better. It shows that the society is sensitive to the needs of the poor and anybody making even a small effort for their uplift is recognised."

Super 30 is a pioneering school run by Anand since 2002. In Super 30, Anand selects 30 meritorious students, mostly from poor families and grooms them for the IITs. The students stay with Anand. They are provided free food and lodging. Anand bears the expenses on his own with no financial help from anyone.

Super 30's Anand has also inspired a Noida-based institution that has come forward to help underprivileged engineering aspirants.

United College of Engineering & Research, which has branches in Noida and Allahabad, and runs seven engineering courses, has decided to tutor meritorious and economically weak students, free of cost.
