Patna City-based Lady Health Visitor School of Nursing tells a sordid tale of government negligence as far as providing basic amenities to students is concerned.

The trainees of the nursing school are living in inhuman conditions with no one to listen to their grievances.

Though there are 26 bathrooms at the school-cum-hostel, none of them are in good condition. Not a single bathroom has had a steady water supply for the past one year.

Students are forced to source water from the lone handpump on the ground floor of the campus. The girls, who stay on the second and third floors, are facing a tough time because they have to move up and down the entire day even if they want to drink water. What is adding to their misery is that the sweeper does not come regularly to clean the bathrooms, forcing the students to take up the cleaning work themselves every day.

“We somehow manage to clean the bathrooms on our own yet they are not hygienic. Many of us have fallen ill because of the insanitary atmosphere,” said Savita Kumari, a student. The teachers of the nursing school dread to relieve themselves on the campus latrines because they feel they might fall sick. “I avoid visiting the school bathrooms. Now, I am used to the routine. I also know that avoiding nature’s call is not good for health but at least it is better than using an unhygienic bathroom. I feel sorry for the students, who have no other option but to use the unhygienic washrooms, because they have to live here round-the-clock,” said Padma Kumari, a teacher with Lady Health Visitor School of Nursing. On the status of the bathrooms, school principal Nilam Tiwari said: “We don’t have funds to hire sweepers separately.

“Sweepers, who provide their services to Guru Govind Singh Hospital also come to the nursing school. The sweepers do come to clean the bathrooms but not regularly.”

Lady Health Visitor school of Nursing is attached with Guru Govind Singh Hospital.

On the water supply problem at the nursing school, the principal said: “There’s a leakage in the pipeline that has triggered the water crisis. We do not have enough funds to repair the pipeline.”

When The Telegraph tried to contact health minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, he was not available for comment as he was in Bhagalpur to attend a function.
