Sports hub for poor

Patna, Sept. 24: Super 30 and Rahmani 30 have been shaping up the careers of Bihar youths for years. Now, another institute — Chak De Bihar —has taken up the responsibility to promote young sporting talents in the state.

Chak De is a group of promising sportspersons, hailing from underprivileged sections of society. The seeds of the institute were sowed by Abhayanand, the director-general of police, when he was posted as additional director-general (ADG), Bihar Military Police (BMP), three years ago.

Abhayanand, credited for training scores of aspirants from poor families crack the JEE, started Chak De Bihar with a team of professional sportspersons who have won laurels for the state at several regional and national-level championships.

Be it basketball, handball or athletics, the members of Chak De Bihar have performed well in all the tournaments they have taken part in so far. “Five boys and girls each are going to Chennai to take part in the National Handball Championship,” said Raveendra Sankaran, deputy inspector-general (human rights and legal affairs) who is also the nodal officer of the Bihar Police’s sports team.

Raveendra said the concept to groom sporting talent from downtrodden families was conceived when Abhayanand was posted as the ADG, BMP, about three year ago. “On his initiative, around 150 children residing within the BMP campus and outside the periphery of the campus were invited to show their potential in each and every sport,” he added. Finally, 75 children were selected and introduced to various games. While sub-inspector Uma Singh and constable Sanjay Kumar Singh have been appointed as coaches for athletics, havildar Niranjan Sharma and constables Krishna Mishra and Gopal Singh Rana have been selected as coaches for basketball teams.

Similarly, constables Manoj Kumar Singh and Ram Ayodhya Ram have been made coaches for handball and Peter Lakda for hockey team respectively. Prem Prakash Gupta, Amjad Ansari, Santosh Kumar and Druv Kumar Singh bagged gold and silver medals in the east zone athletics championship held in Calcutta recently.

In Basketball, Chandan Kumar, Manjit Kumar, Govind Kumar, Sunit Kumar, Nitish Kumar, Rupesh Kumar, Sonu Kumar and Vikas Kumar Gupta were selected for different junior level national backetball championships.

In Handball, Suraj Kumar, Nitish Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Deepak Kumar and Munna Kumar (boys) and Priyanka Kumari, Sony Kumari, Tannu Gurung, Prachi Kumari and Pooja Kumari (girls) have been selected for the national handball championship to be held at Chennai.
