Vaishali police have arrested six persons and initiated the process to prosecute more than 150 others in connection with an attack on deputy chief minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi near Chaksikandar in Vaishali, around 30km northeast of Patna on Tuesday.
A mob of around 300 alleged supporters of Lalu Prasad's RJD had surrounded Modi's convoy when he was on way to Kala Pahar village near Mahnar from Patna to attend the funeral of former BJP MLA from Mahnar Assembly seat Achutanand Singh's mother on Tuesday evening.
The police have taken a note of the incident. Those found to be guilty will not be spared," the SP said in Hajipur, the district headquarters town, on Wednesday. He said he visited the spot and inquired about the incident on Tuesday evening.
The station house officer of Bidupur police station, Ritesh Mandal, said unidentified persons hurled stones at Modi's car when he was on way to the village. "The members of the escort team informed the local police, which rushed to the spot immediately," he said.
Modi had alleged that his car was attacked by RJD supporters out of political vendetta. He said windowpanes of four vehicles of his convoy were damaged in the attack.
The area where Modi's car was attacked is known to be a stronghold of the RJD, the workers and supporters of which are particularly angry with the BJP leader (read Sushil Modi) for levelling a series of corruption allegations against Lalu and his family.
Tejashwi denied RJD workers' hand in the incident. "I came to know about the attack from the media. The RJD could never indulge in such an act as it believes in Gandhian principles," he added.
Tejashwi was returning to Patna from Samastipur where he had gone to oversee the preparations for the party's campaign to highlight how the people's mandate, for a Grand Alliance, had been insulted.
