Soon after a Saket court pronounced capital punishment for the four convicts of the Delhi gang rape case, SHAMBHAVI SINGH spoke to a few citizens to find out what they felt about the verdict. Here is what they said:

Abha Jha, 34
Profession: Teacher

I am satisfied with the verdict. It will have a great impact on the citizens of India. It is not about taking revenge but about justice. Men should change their mentality and views on women. Instead of treating women as commodities, they should learn to respect us

SR Choudhary, 64
Profession: Doctor

To hang someone is inhuman. But in this case, it is only justice. It was a crime against humanity. The verdict is not just about the young woman who was raped but also about the security of all women living in this country. It will boost their morale. I would like to request all parents to teach their sons to respect women

Aliya Khan, 21
Occupation: Student

Death penalty was the only punishment for those men. The nation was waiting for this verdict. It feels like all girls in this country have got justice. It is a victory for all women and our society. This punishment will deter other men. Now, it is time to look into what prompted such a crime

Soni Srivastava, 35
Profession: Lawyer

The “rarest of rare” category, under which the court classified this case, deserves the death penalty. The number of rape cases is increasing every day. I do not support death penalty but in this case, it was the only verdict. It will send a strong message to everyone and will deter perpetrators of such crimes

Tanuja, 20
Occupation: Student

Hanging them is not enough. They should have been given harsher punishment. Think of the girl who suffered so much. Hanging the criminals will not solve the problem. The lawmakers should frame stricter laws so that criminals are scared and do not dare to commit such a crime again
