Security alert for 4000 villages

The administration has identified over 4,000 villages as vulnerable so far as security was concerned during the fourth phase of polling on November 1.

Electorate in 55 constituencies spread over seven districts - West Champaran, East Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Siwan and Gopalganj - would vote on Sunday at 14,139 booths.

The Election Commission on Friday issued directives to the district magistrates-cum-returning officers concerned to provide adequate security to the voters of the vulnerable villages, most of whom are from the weaker sections.

Additional chief electoral officer R. Laxmanan said 4,623 villages had been declared vulnerable. Special security arrangements would be in place, he said, adding that central armed paramilitary personnel would stage flag marches in the habitats.

Besides, 3,043 polling booths in the fourth phase have been declared affected with left-wing extremism, with East Champaran district at the top with 1,193 booths.

The state administration has initiated preventive action against 60,000 troublemakers under Section 107 of CrPC. In addition, 12,430 non-bailable warrants have been executed by the police to prevent any untoward incident. Officershave seized 191 illegal weapons, 56 explosives and 17 bombs during the pre-election drive in the seven districts, Laxmanan said.

Close to 1.2 lakh police personnel have been deployed at all the booths were polling would be conducted. The commission has also issued instructions to seal the districts' borders with Nepal.
