Muzaffarpur, March 2: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has pulled up the officials of Khudiram Bose Memorial Central Jail, Muzaffarpur following deaths at the prison hospital.

The commission has asked the state government to look into the matter.

Chief medical officer-cum-civil surgeon A.P. Singh said the hospital is in disarray and has failed to provide proper health services to undertrials and prisoners.

“The hospital is in a shambles,” Singh said. He added there has been complete carelessness on the part of medical officers and he has decided to recruit a fresh medical team in the jail. Singh has removed the erstwhile medical officer, Shiv Shankar Singh, from the hospital and deputed two young doctors, Umesh Raj and Ashgar Ali.

Assistant chief medical officer Rajiv Ranjan had conducted a probe into the functioning of the hospital and strongly recommended action against Singh in the wake of the prevailing anarchy while treating the wounds of ailing prisoners.

Jail superintendent Vishwanath Prasad said the NHRC has taken a strong note of the figures of death of prisoners.

The NHRC reprimanded the authorities concerned to look into the functioning of the jail hospital. Relatives of dead prisoners had complained to the NHRC as well as the state government accusing the authorities of neglecting ailing prisoners.

Prasad said the health of the ailing prisoners deteriorated as the medical officer of the jail hospital remained indifferent to treat the wounds of sick prisoners.

Later, the sick prisoners were admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital and Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur where the doctors often complained of bringing in the patients very late.
