Muzaffarpur will soon have a ring road, connecting national highways (NHs), touching the outskirts of the city.

A detailed project report (DPR) on connecting the national highways - NH-28, NH-57, NH-74 and NH-77, has been sent to the road construction department for approval.

District magistrate (DM) Anupam Kumar has approved the construction of a ring road, urgently needed to reduce the traffic in the commercial city and to rid the national highways of the traffic congestion.

The four national highways traverse Muzaffarpur, which connects the north Bihar region to Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

On December 12, 2014, then chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi had announced the construction of a ring road in Muzaffarpur connecting the NHs for smooth traffic flow along it. The DM has forwarded the ring road project to the road construction department, seeking funds for it.

DM Anupam Kumar said the ring road will be almost 28km long and be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore.

This ring road will connect all the national highways passing around the city. According to the project, the ring road would start from Majholi along NH-28 (Muzaffarpur-Darbhanga stretch) before passing to Pusa Road en route to Rajwara, Mushahri and Rohuva. Then the road would connect from Dalsinghsarai road and pass through NH-28 near Dhigra and Kazi Inda before culminating with the East-West Corridor at Kanti Road.

The DM said: 'Once completed, the ring road will undoubtedly liberate the township from traffic congestion and bottlenecks.

'I have already approved the project plan and sent it to the road construction department. I have requested senior officials of the department to provide funds, pleading usefulness and urgent utility of the ring road. This would prove a milestone in the development of the commercial city,' said the DM.
