The Khabardar Rally of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation has been shifted to Miller High School grounds as three live bombs were recovered from Gandhi Maidan on Tuesday.
The Wednesday meet was scheduled at Gandhi Maidan, where a series of blasts had rocked the BJP’s Hunkar Rally on Sunday.
District magistrate N. Saravana Kumar said: “Gandhi Maidan is not safe for the CPI (M-L) Liberation rally as bombs are still being recovered. On Tuesday also, bombs were found at three more places and it will take at least three to four days to sanitise the whole ground and surrounding area.”
The decision was taken after Kumar held a meeting with the CPI (ML) Liberation leaders.
Kumar added: “After the meeting, we have decided to provide them Miller High School grounds. We have also provided them stretch of Beer Chand Patel Marg from the accountant-general’s office to the Income Tax roundabout. The traffic on this stretch will be restricted and residents are requested not to use this road. We have taken a special permission from the education department to allot the ground and we are thankful that they have allowed us.”
Traffic will be blocked from 6am to 3pm on Beer Chand Patel Marg. The Miller High School ground is hardly 2.5km from Gandhi Maidan.
Kumar also claimed to provide the foolproof security to the Khabardar Rally. “We have already started working towards security measures. There would be proper arrangements, including doorframe metal detector, dog squad and frisking. Apart from that, even CCTV cameras will be installed at the ground, he said.
He however did not divulge the number of CCTV cameras and doorframe metal detectors which would be installed at the ground, which is much smaller than Gandhi Maidan.
About providing facilities to the rally supporters in such a short period, Kumar said: “We will do that and work has already begun. Facilities of toilet and drinking water will also be made. Till the time the rally does not get over, we will provide them security.”
When The Telegraph visited the Miller High School grounds, it was found that police officers were already present along with dog squad team.
On the other hand, Raja Ram Singh, the CPI(M-L) Liberation central committee member, slammed district administration and said: “It is very unfortunate that the district administration has failed to provide us Gandhi Maidan for the rally and we will raise this issue in the rally on Wednesday.”
Dhirendra Jha, the party’s politburo member, said the stage would be put up on the road just in front of the AG office. “Our main stage from where the party leaders will address is coming up at the middle of the road. In such a short notice, we only have this option,” he said.
He added that around 1,000 volunteers would be involved for security.
