Patna, Sept. 18: Rain lashed the state capital today proving the weathermen right. But it brought along waterlogging that spoilt weekend outing plans of several residents.

The downpour, which began late last night, continued throughout the day. While no one had to go out to work or attend schools and colleges, those who had plans of a weekend outing today had to brave waterlogged streets.

Residents of Nala Road, Kadamkuan, Lohanipur, Frazer Road and Karbhighaiya were stuck at home

because of waterlogging. At some places, water of choked drains flooded streets.

Some citizens were delighted over the continuous rainfall, though.

“Thanks to the repeated showers, we enjoyed a pleasant weekend this time. The atmosphere was comparatively cool because of the showers,” said Pratiskha Sharma, a resident of Rajiv Nagar.

Weathermen warned that the Monday morning blues could be complicated by more showers, and those who have to go out would do well to remember their umbrellas and raincoats.

Patna Met department director Animesh Chanda told The Telegraph: “The low pressure zone, which was earlier over northwest Bay of Bengal, near Orissa and Bengal, has now shifted to Bihar and the neighbouring areas. This has caused showers in Patna and the neighbouring areas in the past 48 hours.”

He added: “Till 5.30 this morning, Patna received 8.1mm rain. At present, there are rain clouds over Patna, Chhapra, Jehanabad and Bhabua. These may cause moderate to heave rainfall (between 4cm and 5cm) in Patna over the next 48 hours.”

The Indian Meteorological department has also issued heavy rainfall prediction for all districts in Bihar.

Abdul Sattar, assistant professor of meteorology, Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa, said there could be more rain in the state in the next few days. “At present, the trough line exists near the foothills of Himalaya. This is causing good rainfall in Bihar. This could cause rainfall in the coming two to three days,” he said.

The civic body officials claimed that they were prepared to tackle waterlogging caused by showers.

A Patna Municipal Corporation official said: “All our drainage pumps are ready. We have the capacity to drain out water within two hours if it rains up to 150mm in two to four hours. Small puddles and potholes could, however, remain.”
