Patna, May 13: The state police headquarters have written a letter to the inspector-general (IG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in connection with Thursday’s clash at Patna Sahib railway station.

On Thursday, paramilitary jawans, including those from the CRPF created a ruckus at the Patna Sahib railway station beating up the local people. The incident took place after a tiff over opening the gates of the general compartments of the Howrah- Delhi Janata Express.

With no arrests as yet, superintendent of police (Railways) Suresh Choudhary told The Telegraph that zonal IG Brigu Srinivasan was holding an intense investigation into the incident with his counterpart in the CRPF acting as a nodal officer during the investigations.

“A letter had been written by the zonal IG to the IG, CRPF to find out the details of the incident. The CRPF senior officer has been asked to find out that the jawans travelling to New Delhi after the completion of the Bengal Assembly polls belonged to which company and who was their in-charge. The investigations will move further on the basis of the reply given by the CRPF,” the officer said.

The officer said until now there has been no arrests. “The entire matter is being investigated at this moment. The jawans who allegedly beat up the people are not here now. The police first needs to identify them. It is only after people are identified that an action can be taken. The police are serious about the matter and steps are being taken,” Choudhary added.

The incident, which had snowballed into a bloody pitched battle had started in the morning hours on Thursday after the Howrah-New Delhi Janata Express had stopped at platform number-2 of the Patna Sahib station.

Six general compartments of the train were occupied by the paramilitary forces like the CRPF, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) as well as police personnel from Haryana and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

When the train entered the platform around 9.37am, local passengers wanted to get into the compartments.

When passengers, including women demanded to get into the compartments, the jawans, in a bid to resist them, misbehaved with the women folks resulting in the locals pelting stones into the compartment.

Following this, the jawans apparently pulled the chain of the train, which had started to move, and got out wielding sticks and started to beat up all the people on the platform. The locals resisted and soon a heavy stone pelting started.

As a result of the beating by the jawans, 30 people, including many journalists sustained injuries.

“It is no doubt a serious incident. At present, the FIR lodged is against unknown persons. The reply from the CRPF is expected to arrive soon and further steps will be taken as soon as the police get to know more,” an officer at the Government Railway Police, Patna Sahib station said.
