The PMC's budget for 2017-18 is worth Rs 560 crore, up from Rs 526 crore the year before.
What stands out in the budget is the introduction of new facilities such as playgrounds, parks and health centres aimed at providing better amenities to residents.
The PMC's proposed budget for this year was the agenda of its standing committee meeting on Monday. Mayor Afzal Imam, commissioner Abhishek Singh and other ward councillors attended the meeting.
"The size of PMC's proposed budget is around 20 per cent more compared to last year," PMC mayor Afzal Imam said. "The proposed budget was discussed in the standing committee meeting today. We have included the provisions of creating new playgrounds, park and health centres in this year's budget, apart from purchasing new state-of-the-art sanitation instruments, including road sweeping machines. Two road sweeping machines were brought from two urban local bodies during Prakash Utsav. But the road sweeping machine we plan to buy are more sophisticated and have advanced features."
Sources said the PMC developed around 10 parks last year but their maintenance was handed over to the forest department on the state government's order. "This year too, we plan to develop parks. We will include a provision in budget, saying the corporation would take care of the parks it develops," Imam said.
The draft for this year's budget was not final; necessary modifications will be made at Tuesday's board meeting at the Bankipore circle office.
The civic body also decided to distribute tricycles among the differently abled and to increase revenue collection target. "The target for holding tax collection has been increased from Rs 60 to Rs 100 crore this year," Imam said. PMC collected Rs 42 crore in holding tax against the Rs 80 crore target.
"I just want streets to look clean and drains desilted before monsoon," said Kankerbagh resident Bharti Prasad.
"The PMC should fulfil this promise before thinking about other facilities."
