Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Patna on October 14 to attend the centenary year celebration of Patna University.

The varsity, which was set up in 1917, is celebrating 100 years of its inception.

It has invited Modi for the inaugural event of the celebrations, while President Ram Nath Kovind will grace the concluding event in December.

As the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has sent a confirmation that Modi would attend, sources in the university have come to know that the Prime Minister in all possibility would attend the event on October 14.

The varsity, however, has not received a final date from the PMO officially.

Patna University dean, students' welfare, N.K. Jha, said: 'Though the university has not received any official confirmation on the date of the PM's visit to Patna to attend the centenary year celebration, we have come to know from our sources that the Prime Minister is likely to attend it on October 14.'

Jha added that deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi while attending a swachhata abhiyan (cleanness drive) at Ganga ghat on Sunday said the Prime Minister would attend the celebration on October 14.

For the main event, the university has decided on two venues - Patna Science College and Gyan Bhavan. However, most of the Patna University teachers and officials are of the opinion that the celebrations should be held at the college.

Patna University Teachers' Association (Puta) president Randhir Kumar Singh said: 'As Patna University is celebrating its 100 years of inception and most of the colleges are heritage buildings, such an important function, which is to be attended by the Prime Minister, should be held on the varsity campus. Patna Science College, with huge infrastructure facilities, meets all the criteria to hold a mega event.'

Even varsity officials believe that the main event should be held at Patna Science College.

Jha said: 'We are of the opinion that the centenary year celebration should be held at the Patna Science College, but it can be shifted to Gyan Bhavan if there are security issues.'

Sources said chief minister Nitish Kumar is likely to inaugurate the main convention hall at Samrat Ashok International Convention Centre (Gyan Bhavan) near Gandhi Maidan on October 2 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
