Patna, Dec. 25: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the director-general of police (DGP) within four weeks on the daylight murder of Lakhisarai-based Right to Information (RTI) Act activist Ram Vilas Singh.

A letter sent to Singh’s family by V. Naik, the programme co-ordinator of Access to Information Programme, Delhi, said the NHRC has sought a detailed report from the state police chief on Singh’s murder at Babhangama village under Town police station in Lakhisarai district on December 8. Naik, who attached a copy of the NHRC’s directive with the letter, had submitted a petition to the NHRC on December 9. Taking its cognisance, the NHRC issued a notice to the DGP on December 14.

After receiving the letter last week. The DGP’s office has sought a report from Lakhisarai superintendent of police (SP) Chaurasia Chandrashekhar Azad.

On the instruction of the state police headquarters, Munger deputy inspector-general (DIG) Anil Kishore Yadav visited Lakhisarai on December 24 to review the progress in the investigation of the case. He directed the investigating officer to initiate the process of attachment of property of the accused. The DIG also warned the investigating officer of action for his failure to arrest the three named accused three weeks after the incident.

A team led by Lakhisarai Town police station house officer Santosh Kumar Singh attached the property of two named accused Rakesh Singh alias Bombom Singh and Dilkhush Singh on Sunday.

Abhishek Kumar, the son of the deceased, said he had approached the Bihar State Human Rights Commission (BSHRC) seeking its intervention in the case. “The case should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation,” he said.
