Muzaffarpur, Aug. 8: Swelling Bagmati, Gandak, Budhi Gandak and Lakhandai inundated several villages in the district in the past couple of days owing to incessant rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal.

According to the reports reaching the district headquarters, nearly 700 houses in Mohanpur, Bokchi, Basghatta, Baraitha, Madhopur and Gangia villages under Katra block have been completely cut-off from the road link.

Floodwater has crippled traffic movement at various places. Sharp erosion has been reported along the western flank of embankment in the Gangia village owing to heavy water current.

Several villagers of Gangia fled to safer areas apprehending threats owing to erosion. Standing crops of paddy cultivation on thousands of acres of agriculture land in Dumri, Barri, Sanholi, Bandhpura, Sonpur, Katra, Dhanor and its adjoining villages have been swept away by the water of Bagmati and Lakhandai.

Over 100 families of Mohanpur village dislocated because of the ongoing construction of ring embankment on Bagmati in Aurai block have taken shelter on top of the embankment in the open.

The circle officer of Aurai block, Ranjan Sharma, said: “I have sought details of the displaced families from the panchayat bodies so that necessary relief material could be provided.”

The state government has decided to distribute foodgrain and plastic covers to the displaced families leaving their villages because of flood.
