Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar has in his affidavit for the state Legislative Council polls mentioned he faces charges in a case of murder.
A report on the affidavit of all 11 newly elected MLCs says Nitish's affidavit mentions that a court in Barh had taken cognisance of the case, but it was stayed by Patna High Court in 2009 and is still pending there. The murder, which took place in 1991, had five accused persons, including Nitish. The apex court last year dismissed a petition alleging that Nitish had tamperedwith facts; it was pointed out that the police investigation had cleared Nitish as being not guilty.
Nitish is not the only one facing criminal charges. Out of 11 MLCs, five declared criminal cases. Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi has declared that he faces cases related to bribery and defamation and disobedience to order issued by a public servant.
Former chief minister Rabri Devi declared she was facing two cases related to criminal conspiracy and two related to cheating and dishonesty. RJD state president Ram Chandra Purbey faces two charges of disobedience. Former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's son Santosh Kumar Suman, too, faces charges for the same.
The report also indicates that 9 out of 11 MLCs are crorepatis - having assets worth over Rs 1 crore - and the average value of assets of the 11 MLCs was Rs 5.58 crore. All the 6 RJD and JDU MLCs and two of three BJP MLCs are crorepatis. HAM MLC Santosh Kumar Suman is also a crorepati. The average asset of three RJD MLCs is Rs 10.07 crore and of JDU MLCs Rs 7.34 crore and the three BJP MLCs have Rs 1.95 crore on an average.
The movable and immovable assets of former chief minister Rabri Devi tops the list at over Rs 17 crore, followed by JDU MLC Ram Mashishabar Mahto with over Rs 15 crore. RJD MLC Khurshid Md Mohsin has assets worth over Rs 8 crore. Interestingly, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi is sixth with assets worth over Rs 3.4 crore. But he is still ahead of Nitish who stands seventh with Rs 3.09 crore.
BJP MLC Sanjay Paswan and Congress MLC Prem Chandra Mishra are the only two MLCs who are not crorepatis. Rabri was also the only non-matric MLC in the list .
