Patna: The arrest of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) postgraduate student John Mehta alias Rajiv Ranjan is the proverbial tip of the iceberg of a deep-rooted racket around the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges, police believe.

John was arrested on Tuesday by a Delhi police team.

"The Delhi crime branch team, before leaving for the national capital, said that they will come to Patna again as there are many medicos who are involved in the NEET question paper leak case," said an officer attached to the Pirbhore police station who accompanied the Delhi cops during the raid on PMCH.

John did not just sit for the NEET for a medical education aspirant and he himself also got through to PMCH by fraud, police sources claimed.

"John Mehta is not his original name," claimed the Pirbhore police station officer, who spoke under cover of anonymity. "He is around 40 years old, and got admission at PMCH after he secured 386 rank in the NEET-PG (for MD courses) examination held last year." the officer said. "We have come to know that John Mehta was an average student but he secured 386 rank in the NEET-PG entrance test and in Bihar he was the third topper.

The cops have come to know, the officer said, that John completed his MBBS after more than a dozen attempts, but secured admission at MD in his first attempt.

The Delhi police came to know about John a few months back when they arrested some persons in connection with cheating at NEET from an examination centre at Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, the officer said. Sources said that computer servers at many examination centres were hacked to help some students cheat in the examination.

Police sources also claimed that John had managed to get several candidates admitted for medical courses in lieu of huge amounts of money, and that the Delhi cops had taken the certificates and admit cards of several candidates who are pursuing MD courses at PMCH.
