A little something for the eyes, a little for the mind and loads of fun made up the past few days for students of different institutions in the city. Sabbalpur diara was not the only place for kites last week, as JD Women's College organised a competition on its campus as well. Girls from the institution also let their hair down at a freshers' party.

Up in the sky

Kites of different shapes and sizes dotted the sky on January 13, a dayahead of the Makar Sankranti celebrations at Sabbalpur diara, as JD Women's College organised a kite-flying competition for its girls.

Unchi Udaan, as the daylong event was called, was organised by the institution's sports department for the first time this year.

'The competition was organised to revive the age-old tradition of kite flying,' said Shanta Jha, said head of department, sports.

She added: 'Even in this cold weather, the students were enthusiastic about taking part in the competition. It was commendable on their part.'

Rakhi, a BA Part-II student, clinched the first position.

A free dental check-up camp was held later in the day by the college's National Service Scheme wing. Around 300 students from the different departments attended it.

Test for grey cells

St Xavier's College of Education organised a quiz competition for its BEd students last Friday.

The participants were asked questionson current affairs, history, geography, science, sports, literature, culture and entertainment. A special round was conducted on testing the students' knowledge about the institution. One of the questions was when is Sports Day scheduled this year. The answer - February 22 (the programme is organised on different days each year.)

Four-member teams were formed from four houses of the college - Tagore, Gandhi, Aurobindo and Zakir. There were a total of 15 rounds in the quiz and in each cycle, there was something to test the grey cells of the audience too.

Deep Kumar, an assistant professor of the college, conducted the quiz while Preeti Sinha, another faculty member, kept the scores.

Aurobindo House won the quiz. At the end of the competition, college principal Father Thomas Perumalil gave the members participant certificates.

He later said: 'The quiz competition was organised to update the students on current affairs and train them in conducting similar sessions in institutions they are appointed in once the BEd course is over.'

Time to party

The party was on, the heels were in place and the dance floor was on fire.

JD Women's College students danced to peppy numbers such as Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai (from the Sonam Kapoor-starrer Khoobsurat) and Oonchi waali heel pehankar dance Basanti (from 2014 film Ungli) at the freshers' party for Intermediate students on Saturday.

The newbies not only came with their pretty dancing shoes on but also strutted down the ramp for a fashion show. The participants walked away with titles such as Miss Smile, Miss Beauty and Miss Regular.

Students of BA Part I and Part II also put up a cultural performance and walked away with applause.

Rupam, an Intermediate (arts) student, clinched the title of Miss Fresher at the end of the day. 'The college was a different place today. Everybody was cheering for us and it felt absolutely amazing,' she said.

If JD Women's College welcomed the new students on January 17, Magadh Mahila College bade farewell to their seniors.

They came dressed in their best outfits - saris and Anarkali dresses - to walk down the ramp.
