Leopard family enters state

Patna, March 2: A pair of leopards, two male leopard cats, a female leopard cat and two female jungle cats are set to add to the count of felines at Patna zoo.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is getting the animals under the animal exchange programme with Assam State Zoo, Guwahati and Sepahijala Wildlife Sanc-tuary, Tripura.

The truck left for Patna from Guwahati zoo on February 29 with the seven animals. A zoo employee travelling with the truck said: “We are at Purnea now and the truck would reach Patna around midnight.”

A team of employees, including a veterinary doctor, from Patna left for Tripura and Guwahati on February 22. Under conditions set under the animal exchange programme, a truck carrying a pair of hippopotami, a pair of Indian peacocks, a pair of golden pheasants and a pair of silver pheasants left Patna zoo on February 26.

At present, Patna zoo has three female leopard cats, two female leopards and two male jungle cats.

To promote breeding, the felines are being brought to the zoo, sources said. Arrangements are being made for the accommodation of the new members, sources added.
