Police have come up with two theories to explain Indore girl Shristi Jain's recent murder in Patna.
One of the possibilities, police sources said, is an alleged affair with one Suresh Reddy, who was staying in the same hotel as Shristi.
The other motive is money - something Shristi's family members did not buy - amounting to Rs 1 lakh for medical expenses incurred towards treatment of Rajneesh's kidneys.
Rajneesh, the principal accused in the case, is absconding. He had undergone kidney transplantation twice.
Family members of Shristi - father, mother, brother, sister, an uncle and aunt - cremated her body at Gulabi Ghat on Wednesday afternoon. Sushil Jain, her father, said: "My daughter has been murdered here and the killer is still roaming free. The police should arrest him immediately. She had come to know the man just 20 days ago."
"The girl's family is sticking to its old version. According to them, their daughter and Rajneesh had got in touch around 20 days back on a matrimonial website and had decided to meet up. The girl had come directly to Patna from Delhi to meet him. While at the airport, the girl had noticed a pistol with Rajneesh and had changed her mind and decided to leave. But with her tickets not booked, she was forced to stay on," Patna senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaaj told The Telegraph on Wednesday.
At present, several police teams are conducting raids in different areas to pick up Rajneesh and one Rahul, his relative, who was also with him when the girl was shot dead.
"It has come to knowledge through the investigations that Rajneesh's health condition is not very good and he has had kidney transplantations twice. Also, it has been known that besides working in a financial firm in Delhi, Shristi used to work part time in the clinic of a Delhi doctor. The police suspect that Rajneesh, who too had been to Delhi earlier for treatment, befriended Shristi and both had entered into a relationship. In the hotel, the boy was seen shouting that the girl is a fraud and had usurped Rs 1 lakh from him. He must have invited the girl in Patna so that he could pay her the money required for his treatment but both of them fell out over finances resulting in Rajneesh taking the step. Rajneesh's family has confirmed about his medical condition and the police have recovered medical documents from his Raghopur residence," deputy superintendent of police (sadar) P.K. Mandal, said.
The police felt the other possibility more convincing.
"During the second day of her stay in the hotel, Shristi had befriended another hotel guest, Suresh Reddy who hails from Bangalore. It has come to light that both had got along well and Suresh had brought her a cellphone worth Rs 10,000. They both had gone around Patna and returned late in the night after watching a night show of a film. Rajneesh must have come to know about this and felt cheated. Both of them had a heated discussion in the hotel reception for an hour on Monday before she left Rajneesh and boarded an auto-rickshaw. The police, at present, are investigating both these possibilities and making attempts to nab Rajneesh. He is also wanted in a kidnapping case and is of a dubious character," Maharaaj added.
The sources said the murder could have been prevented if the hotel staff was alert and proactive.
"A hotel waiter saw Rajneesh with the pistol twice. But Rajneesh paid him Rs 200 and asked to be quiet which he did. Shristi and Rajneesh had a heated discussion for an hour at the reception. The local Jakkanpur police station is at a stone's throw distance from the hotel but no hotel staff thought of informing about it to the police. The police would have acted immediately if the waiter had informed that a person lodging in the hotel was carrying a weapon," another police officer said.
