Araria/Patna, June 5: Three FIRs have been lodged with Forbesganj police station in Araria district in connection with the Bhajanpura firing which left four persons dead and over two dozen injured.
A home guard jawan, who was captured live on TV cameras while thrashing a youth lying unconscious after a violent clash between some residents and the police on Friday, has also been arrested.
Purnea deputy inspector-general Amit Kumar said the first FIR has been lodged in connection with vandalism and arson at the construction site of the proposed starch factory and altogether 1000 people have been made accused in the case. The second FIR is related to attack on the police while the third FIR has been lodged against the home guard jawan for beating up an unconscious youth.
Home secretary Amir Subhani and additional director-general of police (headquarters) Rajvardhan Sharma, meanwhile, returned to the state capital from Forbesganj today. The two officers would submit their joint report on the firing incident to chief minister Nitish Kumar tomorrow.
The four persons killed in the violence have been identified as Mukhtar Ansari (23), Mustafa Ansari (22), Sazmina Khatoon (40) and her 9-year-old son Sonu.
Inspector-general, Darbhanga zone, R.K. Mishra said the home guard jawan has been identified as Sunil Kumar Yadav. “The jawan has been arrested and instruction has been given to the concerned station house officer to book him under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” he added.
Yadav was shown on private television channels beating up a youth who was lying unconscious in a field after receiving bullet injuries in the exchange of fire on Friday. Mishra said additional police force has been deployed at the construction site and also in the Forbeganj town as a precautionary measure. He said efforts were on to pacify the agitators.
Sources said that there were three theories on which the police investigation was proceeding. The police were ascertaining the role of some former mukhiyas, sarpanchs and other public representatives, who were reportedly not happy with the company being set up in the area.
The proprietors of the jute mills in the area were also not happy with the new factory plan.
The political links of the agitators are also being verified.
