Patna, April 24: More than a fortnight has passed since Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) students took to agitation and a week into their hunger strike but it has failed to make any impact either on the varsity authorities or on the government.
The issue even gained political colour yesterday after RJD state president Ramchandra Purbey questioned the expenditure incurred on setting up CNLU and its zero placement record.
The students’ strike continued today also but those sitting on strike were replaced by another batch of students. Sudhanshu, a CNLU student, told The Telegraph: “The 11 students, who were sitting on hunger strike, have been replaced by another group of students, as their condition deteriorated and some had to be hospitalised.”
Sudhanshu added: “We are students of a reputed institute and our parents have invested a lot in building our career. We cannot indulge in unruly incidents like students of other universities. We are students of a law university and believe in peaceful way of protests, but our silence should not be treated as our weakness.”
Even Purbey, while criticising the government apathy on the students’ problems, had appreciated the students who have resorted to the Gandhian style of protest.
Yesterday, a group of civil activists led by People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) member Vinay Kanth visited the students and was briefed on their problems. Kanth said that the students’ demands were genuine, urging them to join civil forces and people fighting for their demands.
Meanwhile, in another development, the state Bar council has sent a letter to the state government, university authorities and students detailing about the way the problem of the students can be sorted out.
The Bar council letter states that if possible, the students of the varsity can be easily absorbed as consultants in lok adalats, as assistants of senior counsels and even by law firms with the support of the government.
Abhiraj, another student of CNLU, said: “The state government should be serious about our problems, as the CNLU pride is directly associated with the state government’s pride as it is one of the big dreams of chief minister Nitish Kumar.”
The students claimed that both CNLU and Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna are said to be the dream projects of chief minister Nitish Kumar but both have different stories.
While the annual package being offered to students of CIMP has touched reached more than Rs 12 lakh, CNLU students have still to open their accounts in respect to securing placement.
