Vasundhara Varma loves romantic movies, chatting with her friends on the Internet and socialising on Facebook like most youths her age. But the 25-year-old is also a successful entrepreneur.
The fashion designing graduate of Patna Women’s College launched Sudaksha — a brand under which she sells handmade products of Haryana-based artisans — in November last year. A visit to Haryana in October gave her the inspiration to launch her business.
“My brother Hrishek, who is a clinical psychologist, lives in Gurgaon. He has an interest in art and often meets artists while visiting exhibitions. While visiting him, a friend took us to meet poor artisans who make beautiful products from simple raw material like newspapers,” Vasundhara told The Telegraph.
She added: “After passing out of college with a degree in fashion designing, I could not find the right platform to launch my career. But after seeing the work of the artisans in Haryana, I was very impressed. I immediately decided to collaborate with them and launched my brand within a month.”
She designs the products herself and sells them from her home at Patliputra Colony.
“After I make the design, I give the artisans a brief. Then, they make the product,” said Vasundhara, adding that the profits are shared equally.
She said: “They work as hard as I do. I cannot snatch their rights. They get 50 per cent of the profits.”
The only raw material used is old newspapers. The entrepreneur sources it from kabadiwalas (junk dealers).
