Patna, Sept. 16: In a bid to provide MBBS students the best learning experience, the newly started medical college at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Institute (IGIMS) has decided to invite guest faculty from the top institutions like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Banaras Hindu University Medical College and King George’s Medical College, Lucknow.
Dr Arun Kumar, the director-cum-principal of IGIMS Medical College, told The Telegraph: “Not that the faculty in our medical college are inferior or inept. But there is always a scope for improvement. So we will invite guest lecturers here.”
Kumar said the institutes had given their consent to send faculty members to deliver lectures for the benefit of the MBBS students at IGIMS. “Now we are in the process of sending letters to the institutions formally. To start with, a senior professor of the anatomy department in Benaras Hindu University Medical College will visit the institution in the first week of October. We will get our medical college inspected by the visiting professors and seek their advice on technical and physical betterment of the institution,” Kumar said, adding that all efforts were on to slowly evolve the medical college into a centre of distinct medical learning.
The medical college has also advertised to fill up the five vacancies in the faculty. “Five posts are yet to be filled up in the department of basic sciences like anatomy, biochemistry and physiology. The institution hopes to recruit qualified medical teachers against the vacancies within the next two weeks,” said a senior official in the institution.
The MBBS classes started at the institution last week. Officials said 96 out of total 100 MBBS seats in the medical college had been filled up.
The institution is now aiming to fill up the remaining four seats by the end of September through third counselling of Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted the institution permission to run the medical college for a year. Thereafter, it would inspect IGIMS again to check if the health cradle had been following MCI guidelines and all the undertakings submitted at the time of application were complied with. According to sources, MCI — the supreme governing body of medical colleges in the country — would grant permanent status to IGIMS as a medical college only if it successf ully fulfilled all the eligibility criteria for four consecutive years.
