Patna: RJD chief Lalu Prasad's elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, displayed his rustic side when he dug into sattu (roasted gram powder), the famous Bihar delicacy, at his Assembly constituency Mahua.

The former health minister tried to promote sattu by eating it in front of the people of his constituency at an event christened "Sattu party with Tej Pratap". The elder brother of the Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, was at Karhatiya Bujurg village in Cehra Kala block of Vaishali district, around 32km north of Patna.

Seated on a chair, Tej was first eating sattu on a table but soon he sat down on the ground, claiming that it was food of the poor and the down-to-earth and so he should sit on the ground. He mixed hand-pump water, lemon and salt in the sattu flour and knead a small ball before relishing it with mango pickle, green chillies and onions. He used the occasion to taunt Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Nitish Kumar and challenged them to eat sattu.

"I am absolutely sure that Nitish ji has never tasted sattu because it is the poor people's diet. I challenge the Prime Minister and even Amit Shah, who is coming to Patna on July 12, to eat sattu. These people are always on flights, so they don't know about the taste of sattu, which Bihar people eat," said Tej, surrounded by supporters.

In Lalu's style, he distributed small balls of sattu among people standing around. He said he wanted to promote the Bihari dish across India. "Wherever I visit, I always carry sattu with me. Like my father, I love this a lot," Tej stressed.

Slogans of Tej Bhaiya Jindabad (long live Tej Pratap) rent the air followed by Garibo ka Massiha (messiah of the poor).

Ever since Tej got married, he started frequenting his Assembly constituency, especially after his open revolt in the party about which his family members are upset. On July 1, he had organised "Tea with Tej" programme in Mahua..

Before eating sattu, he drove a cycle rickshaw, asking its puller to occupy the seat behind. He also bathed in the village using a bucket at a hand-pump.

At the end of the day, Tej stressed that he will keep on visiting his constituency and do all possible things its people. He also attacked chief minister Nitish Kumar, claiming that his government was in coma and Nitish was finished.

Tej iterated that his younger brother will be the next chief minister of Bihar.
