Patna, Sept. 20: Two years ago, he hung up his boots to turn himself into a lawmaker from just protecting law.

Now, Som Prakash Singh wants to quit the Assembly as an Independent member as he has “failed” to deliver the “desired result” and go back to his old uniformed job.

The sub-inspector of police was elected from Obra Assembly constituency in Maoist-hit Aurangabad district in 2010. “I quit the job as a sub-inspector of police about two years ago to serve the people. I had joined politics to fight against corruption at the grassroots level. But now I am fed up with corruption prevalent at government offices,” a visibly upset MLA told The Telegraph.

Singh, who gained immense popularity as a police officer for helping tribals and providing educational kits to their wards, said: “They elected me as their representative to sort out problems. But I have not been able to redress their grievances,” Singh, in his early 40s, said.

Singh added: “I have made up my mind to quit politics. This is the call of the inner voice.”

Referring to a recent case in which he had asked the people of his constituency not to pay bribe to public servants for any official work. A few days later a public distribution system (PDS) dealer Ramji Yadav met Singh and said: “I along with other PDS dealers have to pay a fixed amount as bribe to food and civil supplies officials to get our quota of ration.” Singh said: “Chief minister Nitish Kumar asked food and consumer affairs minister Shyam Rajak to look into the complaint on a priority basis,” he said.

To his utter surprise, the MLA came later came to know that Yadav’s PDS shop licence had been cancelled. Even Yadav was asked to fork out a hefty bribe when he went to withdraw security deposit of Rs 40,000 from the department. “He is so financially weak now that he can’t pay fees of his children’s education. I am raising funds to help him so that the study of his ward, a student of engineering at Aligarh, doesn’t discontinue,” he said. “I received several similar complaints in the two years. This is perhaps not the right place for people like me.”

Minister Rajak said the licence of Yadav’s shop was cancelled after irregularities were detected. “It is true that MLA Singh had requested for a detailed inquiry,” he said. “I will order an inquiry if he (Yadav) submits a written complaint with evidence,” he said, adding that the allegations against Yadav were probed by an honest officer of Aurangabad district.

Yadav, on the other hand, alleged that he was tired of running from pillar to post to get back the money paid in advance. “I decided to approach the MLA after I did not get any help from the department officials,” he said.

The MLA, however, said that he would not budge and continue his fight against corruption. “Lekin bugle phuk kar hi jaoonga (I will leave politics only after blowing whistle against corruption),” Singh said.
