Patna, Feb. 11: Not a single hand will rise to salute CRPF jawan Yashwant Singh as he rests in the coffin. Guns will not be lowered in his honour, nor there will be any guard of honour for the 33-year-old.

The spurned lover murdered national-level kabaddi player Manisha Devi on Wednesday before shooting himself.

His heinous crime disqualified him for all these honours post-death.

Even his family members seem to have not forgiven him for his crime.

None of his relatives would be coming to Patna to collect his body.

In sharp contrast, a huge crowd had turned up at the forensic science department of PMCH where Manisha’s body had been kept for post-mortem on Thursday. Ministers rushed in. Manisha’s father had come to collect her body personally.

“Warmth and lack of it separated the good and the evil even after the death,” said a youth outside PMCH today.

Yashwant succumbed to his injuries last night at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Bidhan Chandra Patra, the commandant of the 131st battalion of the CRPF told The Telegraph that his body would be flown to Delhi tomorrow morning.

“Some formalities could not be completed today. The embalming of the body could not be done. It has been presently kept in the morgue of the PMCH. The body will be flown to Delhi tomorrow morning. A jawan will accompany the body to Yashwant’s hometown in Rajasthan,” Patra said.

The commandant confirmed there would be no guard of honour for Yashwant.

“A criminal case has been lodged against him and it disqualifies him for the guard of honour. But we will make necessary arrangements to ensure that the mortal remains of Yashwant reaches his family members,” Patra said.

“Some of his family members were supposed to come down to Patna. We were informed that his brother and nephew would come down here to collect his body. But they called us up stating that it was not possible for them to come to Patna, as the condition of Yashwant’s family was critical after the news of his death reached them. None of them are coming now. Thus, we will send the body with a jawan,” Patra said.

Yashwant is survived by his wife and two children.

Patra said Yashwant was a silent man. Perhaps he was emotional too, the commandant said.

“We cannot speak much, but his act (firing at Manisha) shocked us. His death has saddened us,” a jawan of the battalion said.

Yashwant had sneaked out of his camp on Wednesday with an AK-47 rifle and shot Manisha to death after the girl resisted his advances.

The incident occurred near Moin-ul-Haque Stadium at Rajender Nagar.

According to the police, Yashwant was under the influence of alcohol. He had asked for the cellphone number of 22-year-old Manisha.

Employed as a clerk in the divisional railway manager’s office in Danapur, Manisha was supposed to participate in the National Games in Ranchi, starting from February 12.

The kabaddi player was murdered in cold blood. The white lie of Yashwant for collecting the AK-47 rifle from the armoury half-an-hour before his duty was over on Wednesday hinted so.

Personnel on duty at night are entitled to carry arms. Yashwant, who died yesterday, was posted at the main gate of Moin-ul-Haque stadium in daytime. His duty was till 6pm. So he was unarmed.

He left his post half-an-hour earlier and went to the battalion armoury. He told the koth (armoury) commander that he had been given night duty and he wanted a gun.

The commander believed in Yashwant, made the required entries and gave him the AK-47 rifle with cartridges. He slipped out of the CRPF camp with the gun and killed Manisha.

Police said Manisha’s murder was a result of a love triangle gone horribly wrong.

Yashwant told Patra at PMCH on Wednesday that he was in love with Manisha but she was having an affair with an Indian Army jawan posted in Gaya.
