Glitch delays Metro project report

Alignment hurdle at Bailey road, thanks to Lohia path

Patna: A minor glitch has surfaced in giving final touches to the detailed project report (DPR) of the Patna Metro project. It pertains to the alignment of the main line that would connect the western part of the city with the central business district and also the Patna railway station.

According to the plan details, a major portion of this Metro route would pass along Bailey Road, the lifeline of the city. As the road has several flyovers, the Metro DPR talks of keeping this section underground.

But even this step has led to some problems due to the ongoing Lohia Path Chakra project that entails construction of various under and overpasses between Lalit Bhavan and Vidyut Bhavan on Bailey Road for smooth vehicular movement.

The project is being implemented by the Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited and sources in the agency revealed that there would be four overpasses and five underpasses in this 4km-long grade-separated multi-sectional stretch of road.

"The underpasses of the Lohia Path Chakra project are coming in the way of the Patna Metro alignment. Officials and consultants from our department as well as those from the Pul Nirman Nigam would meet next week for finding a solution as both these projects are very important for Patna," an official in the urban development and housing department, which is the nodal department for Metro project, told The Telegraph on Thursday.

He said based on the outcome of the meeting, the Patna Metro project DPR would be given final touches for being submitted to the Centre. "Either some modification in the Lohia Path Chakra design would be introduced or some changes in the alignment of the Metro would be made. Everything would be sorted out amicably as both these projects are of great importance for the state capital," added the official.

On the likely time that would be taken for giving final touches to the DPR before sending it to the Centre for final approval, the official said: "We would do it at the earliest but no deadline can be set as such."

Once the DPR is finalised, it will be sent for the approval of the state cabinet and then it would be sent to the Centre for a final approval. The idea of having Metro service in Patna was first conceived in 2011. With formation of NDA governments both at the Centre and the state, the hope of early launch of this project has been revived, as the Centre has assured the state of giving early clearance of this project once details are submitted to it.
