Patna, July 12: Students who have cleared their Plus Two examinations this year have turned a new chapter in their life with first step in college.

Adjusting to a new environment is a challenging prospect for any fresher but students of Patna Women’s College have managed it well. New sessions at Patna Women’s College started on July 1.

Shivani, a botany honours student, said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few days in college. Though there is emphasis on discipline here, the environment is very comfortable for us.” One of her batchmates was, meanwhile, in the mood to explore extra-curricular opportunities at the college. “I have heard that a lot of extra-curricular activities are organised in the college. I am waiting for the opportunity to take part in them,” the youngster said.

Sociology first-year student Priyanka has only good things to say about her faculty members, who she said were extremely supportive. “They never let us feel uncomfortable in class and always ask us to clear our doubts, if any,” she added. While a few are happy with the environment and teachers, some are pleased with the strict dress code implemented among teachers and students at the college.

Shweta Suman, a geography student, is one of them. Happy with the dress code at Patna Women’s College, Shweta said: “I am more comfortable with a dress code. I feel, wearing trendy clothes for class does not look good.” Even if her fellow freshers are not of the same opinion, attention of the teachers and senior students on college premises will surely ensure that they toe the dress line.

Patna Women’s College students have to wear salwar kameez, while teachers have to wear saris on the premises.

There is also strict vigil on any cases of ragging, which in turn make the new, fresh-out-of-school students, comfortable on campus.

“The faculty members and final year students, who form the college cabinet, are always on the move to check ragging incidents,” said a fresher in the BCom department.

She added: “On my second day in college, one of the faculty members saw a group of students on campus. On enquiring, she came to know the girls were all first-year students and talking about the class schedule. Only then did she go on her way.”

On such stringent checks, one faculty member said: “We keep a check to ensure that the seniors don’t bully the freshers.” The freshers are not complaining either. “The effort of college authorities is praiseworthy and it has managed to make us feel secure in the new environment,” said Ankita Priya, a BCom student.

Smriti, a vocational student, said: “I enjoy spending time in the canteen with my new friends but I feel the college authorities should take steps to improve the quality of the food served.”

Tanya Singh, a bachelor in business administration, said: “Although, the food at the canteen is tasty, it is oily and spicy. It requires improvement so we can get healthy food.”
