It was back to business for college students in Patna after the year-end holidays. Though the chilly winds continued to howl on the streets, the classrooms were cosy enough. It was also the perfect season for sports and games, and the youths enjoyed outdoor activities as well.
Celebration
Our college was recently given Grade A by the Naac, adding a feather to the cap of our institution. To celebrate this achievement, we organised a function on January 12.
Patna University vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, and Amarjeet Sinha, principal secretary, education, attended the event with many others.
The vice-chancellor said our college had achieved the grade through years of dedicated work in providing quality education.
Our principal Dolly Sinha said she wanted to make our college the best higher education institution for women in Bihar.
Sinha, principal secretary, education, said Magadh Mahila College would never face a human resource crisis. He added: “The college achieved Grade A from the Naac because it utilised its resources in the best possible manner.”
Asha Singh, the Naac co-ordinator of the college, said the combined efforts of all the teachers helped in securing the high Naac grade. “The college has been aiming for this grade for the past three years. We shall work harder now to win more laurels.”
Soccer tourney
Engineering students emerged from their laboratories and libraries to try out physical callisthenics on the soccer field of Birla Institute of Technology, Patna. The three-day football tournament began on January 12.
The inaugural match was between the hosts and BIT-Mesra. It ended in a 1-1 draw. While Avinash of BIT-Patna drew first blood by scoring the first goal of the match, Nishikant soon equalised.
The inaugural ceremony took place on Saturday as well. The chief guest of the ceremony was Rajyabardhan Sharma, IPS and Bihar Public Service Commission member and the guest of honour was Sanjib Kumar Behra, a senior IOCL officer.
S.P. Lal, deputy director, BIT-Patna, urged the students to play in a sportsman spirit. The guests also spoke about sports having the ability to unite different people. Artistes from Kilkari also performed at the inauguration ceremony.
The focus did not shift fromthe playing field at all. On the second day of the soccer tournament, several matches were played. Heritage Institute of Technology (HIT), Calcutta, defeated NIT-Jamshedpur by scoring two goals to one. BIT-Mesra outplayed their Allahabad counterparts and defeated them by scoring six goals to nil. They also defeated IIT-Patna 1-0. BIT-Patna, too, defeated BIT-Deoghar 4-0.
The semis and final were played on January 14. The first semi-final was played between HIT-Calcutta and BIT-Mesra. The match went down to the wire and HIT-Calcutta won in a penalty shootout. The final scoreline was 4-2. The second semi-final was between BIT Patna “A” and NIT Patna. The former won the match easily with a score of 5-2.
Later in the evening grand final of BIT soccer tournament, 2013 took place between HIT Kolkata and BIT Patna (A). This was a real exciting match with a penalty shootout to end the game as the score at full time read 2-2.
Quiz contest
Students and teachers of the BEd department of St Xavier’s College organised an intra-institute quiz contest on January 12. Students from different college houses formed teams. Assistant professor Deep Kumar was the quizmaster.
Contestants from four house — Tagore, Gandhi, Aurobindo and Zakir — all had equal points after 12 rounds. So the result was a tie. All quizzers were given certificates.
Research meet
A two-day research workshop was organised at Patna Women’s College from January 9.
Amarjeet Sinha, principal secretary, education department, was the chief guest and Ashok De, director NIT-Patna was the guest of honour.
Ajit Kumar Sinha, director, UGC-DAE, Calcutta, said it is important for institutes in Bihar to collaborate with each other so that they can share resources.
Surabhi Prasad, head of the department, physics, elaborated on the research being carried out at the college. Rakesh Kumar Singh, convenor of this research workshop said: “Science education and research augmented by innovation aims to help in the prosperity of the society and its sustainable growth.”
The research of undergraduate students was also discussed at the workshop.
