Patna: Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Tuesday refuted the Opposition's charge on the communal tension in Aurangabad and claimed efficient handling of the situation by the local administration helped control the situation and those who were trying to foment communal tension failed in their design.
Modi put the government's side during a brief debate on the adjournment motion brought by RJD MLC Sanjay Prasad who demanded a special debate on Aurangabad communal tension as soon as the Upper House of the state legislature commenced business for the day with the question hour.
Speaking on the issue Modi said there had been no riots in Bihar and few incidents of clashes took place between people of two communities.
"No curfew had been imposed there and also no police firing happened. The administration handled the situation very smartly and those who wanted to foment communal tension failed in their design," Modi said.
He was forced to intervene on the issue as RJD members, barring former chief minister Rabri Devi, stormed into the Well of the House once the adjournment motion was rejected. They kept on raising slogans for five minutes disrupting the proceedings of the House and returned to their seats only after Modi stood to speak.
Earlier, speaking in support of the adjournment motion, Sanjay said there had been communal tensions in Aurangabad. He said the chief minister was not doing anything because of pressure from the BJP.
Sanjay also spoke about Arjit Shashwat, the son of Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, against whom a local court in Bhagalpur has issued arrest warrant but police have not arrested him yet. "Arjit Shashwat is moving freely," said the RJD MLC.
RJD MLC and former chief minister Rabri Devi and MLC Subodh Rai stood at their seats in support of Sanjay when council vice-chairman Harun Rashid informed the House that the adjournment motion had been rejected.
A few incidents of group clashes had been reported from Aurangabad after some criminals had allegedly pelted stones on a religious procession on Ram Navami.
The issue had rocked the Assembly on Monday and chief minister Nitish Kumar had reacted sharply when Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav had raised the issue.
The chief minister had categorically stated that not a single person responsible for creating disturbance there would be spared and he too had refuted Tejashwi's claim that the curfew had been imposed in Aurangabad.
Modi followed his boss in the Council on Tuesday and came down heavily against the Opposition when they tried to raise the issue there.
