Patna, June 27: An infant girl, aged around two months, died today, a day after being administered polio drops at Shahpur village in Vaishali district.
Principal health secretary Brajesh Mehrotra said prima facie, it appeared that the infant did not die because of the polio drops as alleged by the villagers. He said: "Seven children had been administered polio drops from the same vial and had there been any problem in the particular vial, it would affected on every child. The health department would conduct a probe in the case and submit the report to the Centre shortly."
The Centre termed the fatality as "sudden infant death syndrome" and sought a report from the state.
Vaishali civil surgeon Ramashish Kumar said: "Children of Shahpur village received polio drops and other vaccination injections yesterday (Friday). This morning, an infant died and the families of the other children went to sadar hospital with the complaint after which the administration came to know about it. A probe has been ordered. The other children who received vaccination are absolutely fine. The parents of the infant who died made her to sleep on wet ground and so she caught severe cold."
