Residents would be pleasantly surprised to be greeted by female employees at the post office situated in AP Colony of the town.

The first women’s post office of the state started operations from the campus of the senior postal superintendent in Gaya town from Wednesday. The chief postmaster-general, Brigadier G. Bhuyan, inaugurated the office with four employees at present.

“This post office will be of great service to women. They would not have to jostle with men at other post offices. There will be male customers too but priority will be given to female customers,” said Rimjhim, who has been appointed the postmaster.

Apart from Rimjhim, a Group C staff, a postal assistant and a gram dak sevak have been appointed for the post office. Rimjhim was posted in Jehanabad from where she has been transferred here as the postmaster.

Puja Kumari, a resident of chowk in Gaya town, expressed happiness over opening of the office.

“Women had to jostle with men at other post offices to purchase postal stamps, postal orders and others. With this facility, priority will be given to women,” said a beaming Puja.

The senior postal superintendent, Ramvilas Chaudhary, told The Telegraph that female customers would be given priority to open savings accounts, register speed posts, purchase postal orders, postal stamps and others. “The next woman post office in the state would come up in Munger. After assessing the success of the women post offices in Gaya and Munger, more such offices would be opened in Bihar,” he said.

On March 8, 2013, New Delhi became the first Indian city to launch an all-women post office.
