Experts on Wednesday lauded the use of stem cell techniques in making valves for cardiac patients. They said valves generated using stem cell procedure last longer.

Professor Rama S. Verma of IIT-Madras's biotechnology department said: "Under stem cell technology, a cell is used to produce similar cells for making an organ."

Delivering his lecture titled "The recent trends in biotechnology and biodiversity" in an international conference organised from July 27-29 to mark the platinum jubilee celebration of departments of botany and zoology at Tej Narayan Banaili College, Bhagalpur, he said: "With advanced tissue engineering, attempts have been made to fabricate valves with regenerative potential using various polymers and hybrid scaffolds."
