District magistrate Anupam Kumar on Monday said power consumers in Muzaffarpur would get spot bills at their doorsteps from June.
Officials of the energy department have set themselves a target of providing electronic meters to nearly 57,000 consumers by the end of this month. There are more than 2 lakh electric consumers in the district. Around 400 pending applications for new connections would also be cleared.
Kumar has asked officials of Tirhut area electricity board to finish the work within the deadline.
Power bills with erroneous amounts and untimely delivery have been a problem for residents in the district.
“We have to run from pillar to post to get the bills corrected,” said Lazman Sah, a resident of Purani Bazaar.
Such problems could soon be a thing of the past.
North Bihar Power Distribution Company deputy general manager (revenue) Arvind Kumar said: “Meter readers have been directed to note down the bills within a stipulated time.”
Agencies engaged in preparing bills have also been asked to furnish flawless statements to consumers. “The power department is also planning to set up monthly camps to address the complaints of consumers,” he added.
Besides bills, power consumers can also expect better maintenance work this summer. The DM said: “Private agencies have been involved to address problems in transmission and maintenance work.”
Power consumers claim burning of transformers is a major problem.
Malighat resident Raj Kumar Singh said: “Transformers catching fire or not working properly has become a regular problem. There is no one to address it.”
The officers concerned could, however, face action if they are found not performing their duties this summer.
“Junior engineers would be held responsible and may face action if transformers get burnt because of lack of maintenance,” said DM Kumar.
