Death to 5 Maoists for murder of jawans

A Munger court on Thursday awarded the death sentence to five Maoists for killing two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans and leaving seven others injured in an ambush during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in Munger, around 179km east of Patna.

A Munger court on Thursday awarded the death sentence to five Maoists for killing two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans and leaving seven others injured in an ambush during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in Munger, around 179km east of Patna.

Additional district and sessions judge-I Jyoti Swarup Srivastava also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the five convicts.

The convicted Maoists, Raktu Kora (from Jamui), Mannu Kora and Banu Kora (both from Lakhisarai), Bipin Mandal and Adiklal Pandit (Munger) were sent to the Munger district jail.

Munger additional public prosecutor Sushil Kumar Sinha said the five were held guilty under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of official duty), 147 (rioting) and 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons) of the IPC and sections 3, 4, 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.

Around 50 Naxalites had ambushed a police vehicle carrying 10 CRPF jawans from the Munger district headquarters to a polling station near Gangta under the jurisdiction of Tarapur police station of Jamui Lok Sabha constituency on April 10, 2014.

Head constable Ravindra Rai and constable Sone Gora died on way to the hospital, and seven other CRPF personnel were admitted to Munger sadar hospital.

Munger's Haveli Kharagpur sub-divisional police officer Ranjan Kumar said the CRPF personnel belonged to the 131st battalion of the force.

Sinha said 22 prosecution witnesses were examined.
