Patna: The Gandhi Maidan police on Monday evening conducted a raid and arrested four men enjoying a liquor party on the campus of the State Bank of India's (SBI) Gandhi Maidan branch.
The arrested men have been identified as Raushan Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Shyam Bihari Kumar and Sahindra Paswan.
According to the station house officer of Gandhi Maidan police station, Dipak Kumar, a patrolling team got a tip-off that some drunken men were creating nuisance on the SBI premises.
The police raided the SBI generator room and nabbed four men drinking liquor.
The SHO said: "The four men worked as contract electricians for the SBI. They were celebrating Vishwakarma Puja by drinking liquor."
An alcohol test was conducted on all four men arrested before being sent to jail.
Sources in the police said the four decided to hold the party in the generator room, as they considered the place safe.
A police officer, who was part of the raiding team, said: "The men were found shouting and laughing loudly. On hearing them, guards on duty on the SBI premises got suspicious and alerted the police."
The officer added: "We were surprised to catch them enjoying snacks, fruits and liquor."
The Nitish Kumar government imposed total ban on consumption, possession or sale of any type of alcohol in April 2016.
However, this year, the state government made some amendments in the liquor law under which the first offence under the liquor law is no longer a non-bailable offence.
The first time, the offender will be released after payment of a penalty of Rs 50,000.
If the offender fails to pay the penalty, he will have to spend three months in jail unlike the 10-year jail term under the previous version of the law.
This is not the first time that people have been caught consuming liquor inside government offices.
Almost a year ago, Patna police arrested four employees of the postal department sipping alcohol in their office chamber.
The postal staff had organised the party to give farewell to two of their colleagues.
